Juniper Chinensis 'Kaizuka'

Hi all,

Not long ago I saw a Chinese juniper in a garden near an officebuilding.
It had long, soft bright green needles, bright brown flaky bark and was about 3 meters in height and probably 4 meters wide.

I tried to find out what kind of juniper it was, but forgot to take a picture of it.

I found some junipers on the internet that might be the right ones.
I think it was Juniperus Chinensis Kaizuka. One site even had an English name 'hollywood juniper' for it.

Does anyone know this variety of Juniper, or is it just another shimpaku, or itoigawa or?????
Japanese names are still very confusing!!!

Hollywood Junipers are very distinct from the "Shimpaku" types. There are a lot of these in Bonsai Culture in the US, I have seen many older ones in California, but they may very well be elsewhere and I just haven't been looking. Most of the ones I have seen (noticed) have been larger bonsai, I have a nice medium sized raw tree still in a nursery container after a couple of cutdowns. So, that is all that I know other than they seem to bud back very well, have strong growth and a nice color.

Dick,
Google Hollywood Juniper Bonsai (California might help if overseas). A point that I had not included is that many Hollywoods will be listed as J.c. "torulosa" in the US trade, at least.

I believe Hollywood Juniper is also referred to as Torulusa Juniper

hollywood junipers AKA torolusa, were once very popular 20 years back in the So Ca area as they are found growing practically in every other garden and property. They are closely related to foemina junipers (foeminas are supposedly a "sport" of the torolusa), It's hard to find one with any decent movement and the foilage is not ideal.
 Roy Nagatoshi says its best to graft Kishu or Itoigawa on the hollywood stock as the native foilage is very hard to develop proper pads of foilage with.

I found out that Hollywood Juniper is J.Chinensis Kaizuka, also known as Torulosa.
The fact that the 'garden juniper' is a very beautiful tree, doesn't mean that they make great bonsai I guess.
I'll forget about it and stick with the junipers I have.
