Classical Bonsai Art - Valavanis
« on: March 22, 2015, 05:41 PM »
When I was at the Nashville show last year I had a delightful time at Bill Valavanis' booth. Bought a couple of Shohin, a pot and a copy of his book "Classical Bonsai Art - A Half Century of Bonsai Study" detailing the creations and passion of William N. Valavanis. It was published in 2013 by Internal Bonsai ISBN:978-0-9884042-1-2. If you have not purchased a copy or have seen it yet you should. It is a fascinating book. It covers many topics but what I find particularly interesting is the way Bill has presented the development of dozens of his more famous trees. For example his Full Moon Maple No 25. Bill acquired this particular tree in from James Cross I believe around 1972. He has pictures starting in 1999 through 2011 detailing the development of this tree. Another interesting tree is a Trident Maple No 29. Its pictures begin as a stump in 1983 and end in 2012 with a spectral specimen in full fall color. The list seems endless tree after tree 100 examples in all. It is an awe inspiring example of what we all strive for and really shows what is possible over decades of diligent dedication, study and artistry. It is a great book and deserves to be on all our shelves. If you do not have it yet ask for it for your next birthday or Christmas present. You will not be disappointed. The photography and text are really exceptional. Rob
