Title: Lacebark Elm
Post by: Larrytx on May 23, 2016, 12:48 PM
Hi Folks.  I am a beginner and trunk shopped this Lacebark elm at the beginning of this spring.  The trunk diameter is 1 and 1/8 inches.  The trunk is about 4 and 1/2 inches long.  My question is when do I begin trimming away some of the new growth, or should I continue to let them them grow until more hardened off?
Thank you for any help.

Allow to grow until they're thick enough for your liking then chop back. Usually 1/3rd thickness of the trunk

You might as well choose the branches you want and direct the tree's energy into those branches.  Cut off all the ones you don't need.  Wire the others for direction/angle, and let it grow for the rest of the year.
