Chinese elm problem

Buds fattened in spring then failed to open. The tree just sits there and I am sure it is still alive. Any ideas.

  Have you checked the roots to see if they looked and smelled alright.

I have one, sorry one left, I tossed two, or four, that did the same but died.

If you have been following other threads, these are the same ones with Sphagnum in the soil. Between staying too wet (rotting), and freezing this Hellish winter, I wont keep sphagnum in soil anymore.

 I didnt give up on my heavily root pruned prunus spinosa that pushed leaves then sulked.

I have one more Elm i havent given up on yet. Same buds swelled, now nothing.

What is your soil like?

Scratch test is good. It is in a group plant that has been together for 10 years. Go figure. I will watch it and plan for next year.
