Title: Another collected stump
Post by: M. Frary on June 15, 2014, 07:23 AM
I dug this about a month or so ago. It's a hawthorn. The base is around 4". It just started to push new growth.

Its too bad that you couldn't get a bud to pop where you needed it.  Maybe you can get a graft to take.

Actually there is one right at the top that I can use for a new leader. Since I've never grafted a thing I'm sure I can make do with what I have.
In the spring when I cut everything back for a new explosion of growth isn't it possible for this to push more buds out of the main trunk? This is 1 of only 2 hawthorns I have at the moment and we're just getting acquainted. So I don't know that much about hawthorn except that I've found a ton to collect next Spring and if everything goes good with this one there will be a lot more hawthorns at my house come this time next year!

I probably should let him speak for himself, but I'll bet that Bwaynef was being humorous.  You have such a profusion of new shoots that one is bound to be where you need it!  No need for grafting.

If you can't make do with the buds that've popped, maybe you need to rethink something.  This one looks like it ought to be fun, and I like the movement that's already in the trunk/roots!

You caught me off guard before. There's tons of future limbs to pick from. I like this one also. It's the first hawthorn that I've collected  and was a little surprised at how fast it recovered and started growing.
I found a whole field of these to collect from. A lot of better material but didn't want to dig up a bunch and not survive being collected. Now that I know they take collection well there will be some more coming home with me in the spring.
  Thank you.

Glad it survived! I have wanted a hawthorne for a while, I appreciate their delicate flowers.

I am curious about stumps like these, do you have to do a lot of carving at the top to balance out the taper once things start growing or does the crown usually kind of hide that cut? I see a lot of big materials but wonder about big chops like that.

I actually have to let the top grow until the new leader is as big as the top of the cut. Then I cut  that to a third of the height of the stump then start growing again. If I was in a hurry I could  carve it down for taper but I don't like the way that looks so I wait for them to grow.

Gotcha, that sounds like the way Al chops down his tridents!
