Chip or bud grafting on Acer?
« on: July 28, 2014, 01:58 PM »
Chip or bud grafting is normal for fruit trees. Has anyone used this technique for maples?

I have a couple project trees that might benefit.

I've done chip or bud grafting with a weeping flowering crab, put branches where I wanted them. Success rate for each bud grafted was about 60%, which for a beginner wasn't too bad.

Anyone use this on maples? Any reason to not try this on maples?

As can probably be gathered by the lack of responses, I don't hear of many folks doing much of this.  I suspect its because the graft on Maples will likely be pretty apparent for quite some time.  Give it a try and report your results!
