My photo does not do the tree justice. The tree looks much better in person. I do need to wire the branch on the left down a little.

how much did u initially pay for it at Cass? (if i may ask)
I've been lookin for a good shohin pine for a while now and cass is about 2 hours from me and if they have some reasonable prices i'm willing to make the drive!

Reasonable price is in the eyes of the beholder. But remember, a tree that has been developed, possible worked on for years, does not come cheap. To quote an old saying "You get what you pay for".

I know, some may feel they get better prices here or there but, generally speaking, a trustworthy seller is the best way to go. AND remember, most Bonsai Nurseries and professionals are not getting rich. It is a good thing to help support these nurseries and keep them in business.

An other old saying the best way to make a small fortune selling Bonsai is to..... start with a large fortune!

I will wire this fall. I also need to learn about needle work on white pines. I know many say you are not supposed to on a pluck needles on a white pine, but I have read that kimura and many others pluck them in Japan. I need to learn more before I do anything concerning the needles though.

I dont remember excatly, but I think about $350 (a year ago). This and a batch of larger ones are Japan imports.

Son,

Just to set the record straight - it was a gift. You did not pay anything for this tree, I did. Being a senior in high school student - I fund our collection and our passion for trees (for the most part).

Shimsuki became interested in bonsai after a visit to the Missouri Botanical Garden's Japanese Festival and viewing the Bonsai display in the fall of 2008. It was there that I bought him his first tree, a specimen Buxus microphylla 'Compacta' (Kingsville Boxwood) from Cass Bonsai. It was a reward for a flute competition he did really well in. Today he is co-principle flute for the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra (He won their concerto competition this year and will play Mozart's Flute Concerto No 1 in G major on the stage at Powell Hall in May!). We attended our first meeting of the Bonsai Society of Greater St. Louis in the fall of 2008 and when we introduced ourselves I joked that I was his driver, manager and banker and along for the ride and that it was he who had an interest in 'the little trees'. Together we have since both developed a real love of bonsai. I have always made it a point to become involved in my sons' interests because I firmly believe it develops a close bond between a father and his sons if they can share common interests. My goal was to develop a respectable shohin collection and we are well on our way. We are actively involved in our club and we attend seminars, classes and workshops as frequently as our schedules permit. We have safely gone through our second winter and have yet to lose a tree. We study a lot but have have much to learn. We are having a great time together and appreciate the knowledge of bonsai that this forum shares to aid us on our journey.
