Title: How long has JWP been grafted on JBP ?
Post by: augustine on February 10, 2014, 09:40 AM
All,

I was looking at the very old JWP in the National Collection in DC. The plaque state that the tree has been in training since 1695. The tree looks as if it was grafted onto JBP.

Were trees being grafted as early as 1695?

Thank you.

Augustine

I actually asked my teacher last year about this.  His feeling was that was a more recent development but the story and nice round number does sound impressive.  The tree is amazing.  Frankly I think it might be prudent to adapt the shape of the tree away from the current suggestive form  :-\.  He was not 100% sure on a timeframe for when the process started, but felt it did occur in the Hiroshima area (sometimes grafted white pines on black pine under stock are called "Miyajima").  Miyajima is an island off the coast of Hiroshima which is sublime.

I remember I watched a video about that tree on youtube. It's very interesting, but I don't think it answers your question. However, if you want more info about the tree just search "400 -Year-Old Bonsai Survived Hiroshima Bombing" on youtube.

That is something I've heard before; China being one of the first places to do so.  I have no concrete facts to base my opinion on for the record.
