After getting into bonsai last summer, the end of my first full growing season is drawing to a close.  My JWP is losing color and dropping older needles.  Is this normal behavior for this time of year?  The tree is fairly rootbound, and will be repotted in the spring.  I was also told when I got it not to water it very often, so I didn't.  It does rain here alot, and the temps weren't to high.  pics are from today

Looks healthy enough, maybe a little yellow?  Grafted?  Named cultivar?  How's the soil?  Water?  Have you been fertilizing?  What type?  How much?  Do you have experience repotting?  Might I suggest Boon's repotting video.

It looks like there are still quite a bit of older needles on the tree (particularly the middle of picture two).  Perfectly normal for them to brown and fall, if they weren't removed by cutting (don't pull or pluck) earlier in the year.

Yes it is grafted to JBP rootstock I believe, don't know about a cultivar, the soil WAS good when it was potted who knows how long ago, I was told not to water it to much, and it rains here frequently, so i didn't have to do to much as far as watering.  I have fertilized everything with a 10-15-10 schultz liquid every 10-14 days until mid August, and then again this weekend. The rain makes it tough to keep a good schedule.  No repotting experience like this, but there is a fairly advanced grower in the area.

Where are you? tasmania? croatia? Seattle? Also put some fertilizer on it. Organic, osmocote, something, it really needs it now. John

I updated my profile, and no I'm not in Tasmania.  Is osmocote the pellet stuff I can get at wal-mart, or is there a differnt kind you suggest.  I'm broke, so money is an object.  Thanks for the input.

The pelleted, slow release, fertilizer will work fine, you can get it at Lowes, Walmart, etc.

just a thought, maybe something to start towards after the winter. i think this tree is in desperate need of a new leader, currently it has no defined top. the small branch where the yellow line ends looks like an ideal choice (although we are working in 2d). if possible, that would be where i would take it. this could make a great shohin in a few years.
