Weak Ficus "Golden Gate"
« on: June 23, 2013, 11:58 AM »
This Ficus has struggled this year and is just now making a comeback....because,

1. I repotted too late last year, and,
2. Put it into a too large pot in less than ideal soil.
3. Didn't pay attention to it's watering requirements. The soil stayed too wet.

Coming out of the winter, which was mild, it suffered pretty major dieback, losing quite a few of the smaller twigs. The cooler than normal spring delayed it's growth.

We don't usually have a problem with whitefly until the cotton crops are defoliated, but this year, they jumped on this tree like ..well, like whitefly on ficus.

I was hesitant to fertilize because even though I know better, I keep reading that is unwise to fertilize a weak tree. It just sat there dropping leaves and losing twigs. About a month ago, I decided to rely on my own knowledge9rather than accepted internet advice) and began a rather intensive(Miracle Grow, full strength, at least once a week) fertilization plan.

Here it is almost July and I've limited my work on it to correcting my watering regimen for this particular tree, fertilizing, pruning the dead twigs and applying a few tie downs(just to try and visualize the direction I want to take with it).

Looks like it's recovering well.  ;D

Being new to bonsai I usually wonder what advice we are given (don't fertilize weak trees) is scientifically sound and what's just old wive's tales. If the soil is free draining and you are watering thoroughly between fertilizing then there is no danger of fertilizer build up, so I don't see the point in starving a weak tree. It seems to me that it would help the tree regain it's health more quickly and if the fertilizer isn't being used it's not a big deal since what I use is cheap diluted chemical fert anyway.
