Root over deadwood Tiger bark Ficus
« on: December 11, 2015, 09:42 AM »
Hi everyone. Well ,I did what I told myself I wouldn't do. I was supposed to document and upload all the work I try to do with my plants . I didn't do that. I was very busy with work this summer.  I lost some trees in October a few were on the forum. So this one bonsai was a cutting from another pre bonsai I will show. I have it growing on a upside down  cedar tree stump. It has been growing strong even though I've been slacking on the feedings. I use alot of slow release slow release ferts and rainwater. To make up for my bad schedule.

The tree has a few roots that are thickening well.

Nice Spongeman

Good to see.  I look forward to seeing it progress.

Sorry to hear you lost some trees.  I am going away for 3 weeks on vacation and am totally stressing about it.  I have started to train the house sitter on watering.  Hopefully  all will run smoothly.

Thanks , I really thought I made it easy for my buddy to care for them while I was on vacation . I know he tried his hardest . Then then the cold front hit. But I have alot of projects going. I will try to put some up.

The branch on the left with the aerial root is on the cedar stump. I grew all the branches on the tiger bark cuttings and the mother plant this summer .

I decide to check it's roots since I grew so much so fast. And I found what I thought I would. The roots started looking like the so called ginseng ficus. So I pruned and tucked all the aerial and lower roots. And I grafted step roots on area that can use some thickening up.

Sorry guys my cells auto-correct keeps changing words. But the cut the thick root back ,I left alot of it. I think the aerial roots will fuse well to it when it raised a bit.

The tree is  finally growing a new apex .I root pruned the tree because it's pretty warm out here. I can get some more growth this year. it was in the 80s today . We expect a quick cold front but it is going to warm back up.

The aerial roots in the last pic died back and grew new roots . I want them to grow well so they can help heal the wound . I freshened up the cut and  put the tree back in a cooler I use to keep the humidity level high. Here's a pic of what I hope will be the new apex.

Hi everyone , I needed to get the tree out of that pot /oil pan . I finally found a deep pot that the tree should love . The stump is planted at a shallow depth ,on top of a piece of plastic for lateral growth. I plan on designing a rock pile base for all my root over deadwood . They are cedar root balls, but I still want them to hold up as long as possible.
