Getting started
« on: May 29, 2014, 08:12 AM »
This is a large F. nerifolia that needs work. This past week I have started to thin it out and defoliate the upper portion so that the lower branches will strengthen and thicken. For an idea of the size....the smaller bonsai in one of the photos is my last contribution to the ToM.

That thinning out isn't represented in these photos, right?

"getting started"...The second picture represents a "start" to thinning it out. :) It takes me a while..I'm old. I'll post more as I go along.

I have this tree at work and rarely have time to work on the ones I have there. Whenever I have a few minutes between meetings or on break I walk over and do a little work. This shows the trimming a little further along and a possible new front.

Thank you, Sorce. The bark is wet. It's a very light grey color when dry, but magically turns this reddish hue when wet. I've heard that some people actually oil the trunks of these when displaying them.

Larry,

If you hadn't have moved away you could help me re pot this one. I did it by myself last year and I don't know if I can again. ;D

How'd your vending go at the Lone Star convention?

Does this one have to be repotted every year?

No. But, I'd like to change the front a smidge and it appears slanted slightly to me as it is. Small corrections and a different soil.

Just saw this reply, Andy. Was awol for the weekend.  I would have loved to help repot that monster !
Vending at the Lone Star Convention went great!  I sold 40 trees including some big ones that I didn't care to lift anymore, so I know how you feel. May not have a convention in 2015, but 2016 will be Corpus, so maybe *I'll see you there.
