Title: Banyan style Ficus "Golden Gate"
Post by: andy graham on July 24, 2009, 08:03 AM
I thought I'd share this one this morning.
It's come a ways this summer but still has some filling out to do and then detail work.
Any comments are welcomed.

Andy,
Rotate the tree about 2-3 degrees down on the right side. Then lift the right side branch up slightly.
Just seems to look better to my eye.
Your tree is wonderful.

I made a few small adjustments as per Jerry's suggestion. I think it looks better now. The triangle silhouette of the apex will be more rounded as the tree matures.

The second picture is of the tree as it looked in March. Notice the large root above the ground on the right side.  I have removed it at ground level and the large aerial part is now putting out new rootlets. The green pot is to shade these roots and keep humidity up until they reach the soil.

I like the new pot.  Shallow and wide really sets off the massive trunk.  The foliage pads appear to be developing nicely as well.  It must be a back breaker to move though!

Very nice Banyon style tree. New pot fits well Color gives feeling of water and cool ocean breezes. I would suggest continue to work for low back-branching and some small subranching on front going down for 3 dimension look.My one banyon looks flat and1-2 dimension like a photo from a distance. Just a thought

Congrats Andy, it really is a great looking tree.

I think with this new orientation the tree would look really good with a sectioned crown rather than a completely full, rounded crown. If you know what I mean.

Hi Andy, good to hear from you. It took me a while to determine the exact difference, the first pic is turned cc a few degrees, right? I like the second pic, straight on, but it may not be a fair comparison, as the height of the camera and the shade / light on the trunk is different. I do however like the new pot. Great tree. Larry

From your two most recent pics, I think the first presents the more interesting image. (Sorry, Larry.) The eye seems to be drawn in more, tho that could be the lighting I suppose.

which pot do you guys like the most? I am looking to repot a ficus very similiar to this and i cant decide between a brown, blue or cream pot

Cream-yellow would probably work, and many Ficus, including microcarpa, look good in a medium-blue pot, because of the hint of blue in their leaves.

Update:

Just coming out of a mild winter. Plenty of new growth. Once this hardens up it will be time to prune to increase ramification.

Larry,

It seems like it took longer to start leafing out than usual and I had some die back, but finally, it's starting to "pop".  I guess 3 weeks isn't that long of a time, but we've had some cool nights and I was beginning to worry.

The first photo taken on 3/13 is as it appeared in the Tree of the Month contest. the second is as it appears today, 4/6.

I was just scrolling down thru this post, and after the February 2013 picture post, was just thinking, wow, I bet this tree would look amazing without leaves....and boy was I right. This is a stunning tree, I really love hornbeams and this is a superior one! Have you ever shown it?

I've never been to a show. Never displayed my trees except on the internet. But, thanks, that's a nice compliment.

One month after trimming... I did not defoliate this tree a month ago, but merely trimmed the tips of  every(with a few exceptions)twig. Over the last month the older leaves have fallen. It sometimes looked as if it was dying as all the older leaves turned yellow and gradually fell. They're almost all gone and the new growth is a light bright green.

Hi Andy,

how frequently do you repot this beast? it looks so lush and healthy!

kind regards
Herman

Post by: andy graham on July 07, 2014, 10:24 AM
Thanks Sorce.

Herman,

I repot once every year or two. I think I last repotted this one last year. It hs a lot of small roots crawling across the top of the soil right now and is in need of a cleanup. I'll probably root prune and repot when this new growth hardens off.

It looks great.  This one has really stretched out from when you started this post.  It seems to have "settled" into the pot well also.
