Here is a summer 2014 update. The tree is currently healthy and growing vigorously. I have a few sacrifice branches growing.  Once branch at the very top is the apex - encouraging movement and taper. Another branch is from the top, which is wired down for a future thread graft. Lastly, I was lucky enough to get a low shoot. During the beginning of the spring I resealed the cuts and now they are nicely healing.

Nice progress. Are you planning on repotting into somethng larger in the spring?  I think I'd do a bulb pan, large enough to give the roots room to run.

Yes, I'm looking into repotting, the thread graft, and fixing the roots. The bulb pan sounds like a good idea.
