Title: Trident maple forest defoliation - round 2
Post by: MatsuBonsai on May 16, 2011, 07:15 PM
This is the 2nd year for multiple defoliation for this trident forest.  I didn't get any pictures of the 3 rounds last year, or the first round this year.  Tonight I decided it was time for the 2nd defoliation this year.  The first was a light defoliation and trim back in mid April.  This round was a little more aggressive.  In early to mid June will be the final round, with nearly every leaf removed, except for the smallest and weakest areas.

Pictures are before and after.  Sorry for the poor background.

Looking good there John!!!!!  Give it a few more years and you'll have one fine forest.

Thanks Randy.  This one is the wife's, I'm just the caretaker.  ;)

She put the forest together during Rendezvous back in 2006.

Looking good John, but believe me, I don't envy your responsibility as caretaker. One question comes to mine. What do you believe to bring on the most reduction in leaf size, multiple defoliations, or a massive increase in ramification. And that said, does defoliation bring on just smaller leaves, or does it back bud also?  Larry

I'm not really concerned with leaf size at the moment.  I'm more concerned with redistribution and balance of energy, as well as ramification and back budding.  Leaf reduction is just a happy side effect.  I believe with greater ramification the tree naturally reduces leaf size, as not as much solar collection per leaf is required.

And, round 3 complete.  I'll probably cut back hard in late winter and start over with a few branches.

What would you say the age of the trees are??  I have a forest exactly like yours although I do not know the age..  Could you take a shot at it for me??
