Sorry to hijack this thread one more time...

But, thanks, John Kirby!  I needed that little kick in the pants to go ahead and sign up for the Intensive workshop!  I called Boon this morning, and I'm going the end of October!

Thought I would update this thread.  The tree is doing well. I hope to get lots of new growth this season.

Thanks John.. It was such a coincidence that around the time we had the meeting at your house,  I was looking for shohin, fat trunk spruce material. Couldn't seem to find it anywhere. I guess I couldn't find it because it was hiding at your house. ;D

As the buds extend in April/May cut them in half, they will bud back at the base of the needles. Makes for fine banching.

Rob, very cool tree, Good Luck this yr!

To let one bulk up John, if I dont cut back the buds, will I get knots like a pine?  Do I bud select, for one I have in the ground, to one or two buds even with the goal of bulking up the trunk, and keep the first and second branches growing in proper proportion?

Thanks,
Chris

Christi, to get tem to bulk up, you ave to let the run, remember this is Yamadori. I expect it was stomped  on over the years. It is a good old tree, I had it 10 years, made it a lot shorter. I probably shouldn't have sold it, but it looks really happy. You can't ask for more for your bonsai kids.
