This is a shohin Japanese Maple out at Boon's. I have just started to think about how to develop this tree over the next few years. Increasing the fine ramification is a primary goal. I really like "nontypical" deciduous trees, just haven't found many of them. Should be fun.

I love it. How long did it take to get it into that pot?

Very nice John. Got a question on the first bend. On the inside(or underside) is that crease from being notched? wire scar? or just from thickening up over time? Just curious. In my eyes it does not detract from the overall composition, in fact I think it gives it more character. Smiley

No idea on either set of questions. The mark/crease will disappear, not sure what it is from. John

John, I am with you on the nontypical deciduous. This is a beautiful little maple. Reminds me of a small dragon. Can't wait to see it with its spring wings. This is going to be an outstanding maple in my opinion, great taper and great movement with those tight bends can be hard to achieve. But you have done it. Thanks for posting this little gem!

I will take some when I go out to California next month to work on it- it looks like a jungle now, lots of new growth.

Hi, spent a day with Boon (Saturday) to work on little Maples. This is the tree when we started, didn't get an after picture- was trying to get three trees done in 6 hours...

Anyway, here it is after the early spring flush, and after a good repotting this spring.

John,

Its been a great spring here in St. Louis. Everything is pushing like crazy as well. I really like this tree. Cascades are not that popular for Japanese maples that is why Shimski and I picked up the one from Don a year ago when we saw it. By chance do you remember who the potter was I really like it?
