Ne-agari Measurements
« on: July 25, 2010, 08:40 AM »
Good Morning All,

When measuring a Ne-agari (Exposed Root), in this case a Satsuki, how does one correctly measure the tree to consider its size classification? Since the roots are above the soil line and should have the appearance of trunk is the measurement taken from the soil line or where the roots end and the true trunk begins?

Thanks & Regards,
JRob

I agree, soil line.  However, I've seen some tall (relatively), slender bunjin that are still considered shohin.  There seem to be some exceptions to the established "rules".

Are you going to tease us, or are you going to post photos?  ;)

If you look at Japanese Shohin books (show and otherwise) the absolute size limits are not really enforced, more the trees seem to be assigned by "feel". I know that is counterintuitive to those who like to walk about with rulers (or other measuring devices) but the rigidity to size rules seems to be more of a western thing.

So, while we do measure from the soil, John's point about the type of tree being assessed is also very true. Unless you want to show in the US then someone will have a tape measure........

All,

Here is the tree in question. Satsuki 'Sachi-no-tsukasa'. The tree is an import from Japan. Purchased from David Kreutz at Satsuki Bonsai-en outside of St. Louis.

Good looking tree.  I love the roots on this one.  So, how tall is it?  :)
