Suggestions on a front for this tree?
« on: August 17, 2011, 02:56 AM »
I'm pondering the front of this tree and curious if folks have any suggestions? The piece of wire sticking up in the air is the end of the whip forming this tree.

I have some branches that are getting a bit crowded and thought if I figure out a front, I can then decide what I want to keep and what I can remove to allow light in without penalty down the road.

Appreciate any input!

If this were my tree, I wouldn't be worried about fronts at this point.  I'd want to grow it out for a few more years to thicken up the trunk a bit while continuing to wire and twist the branches.  The more branches, the faster the trunk will thicken, so I would keep them all, and eventually, you will be jinning those branches to add interest.   I'm sure a reasonable front will present itself as the trunk/branches develop.

Hard to tell, but I like the forth and final photo for a potential front as the tree emerges from the soil at a good angle. The current "leader" would not make an ideal apex due to it's location.  However, that trunk line looks good to me.  I agree about growing it out; possibly in ground as that will be a killer tree when the trunk thickens and the bends have less open space.  Good start to it without a doubt.  Peter Adams gave me some great advice once about drawing multiple possible designs of a much older, and thicker bonsai.  It really sinks the concept into your mind.  "Seeing" the future pads and possibly Shari is a great tool for design.

Looks like it could stay in that round container for a couple years or so, but I currently like the photo showing solid atttachment to the ground. Next to last photo.
