My sick Juniper Chinesis :(
« on: December 01, 2013, 12:31 AM »
Hey everyone,

Havnt posted much here but some fantastic posts, made for some interesting reading for a relatively new bonsai enthusiast like me.

I was hoping someone might have some insight into whats wrong with my beautiful little Juniper. Ive noticed over the past few weeks it has been yellowing significantly and all over. Nearby Junipers/Maples/Olives etc have been fine and I've been watering it as per usual.

Worries me especially that its all over the planet making me wonder if maybe there is a root infection or something such.

Love any input you may have. For the moment Ive moved it away from my other planets in case it is infected. Ive posted photos of it alongside the other Juniper I bought at the same time.

Sick Juniper
Its healthy happy brother

When did you buy, or repot these? The yellow one certainly looks dead unfortunately. I am guessing it's either overwatered in that highly organic soil, or you repotted in the heat of summer. I also think these would be juniper procumbens not chinesis. The good news is that the other one looks happy and healthy.

Hey there,

Actually thats the interesting thing neither of those has happened. Ive had it for about a year, maybe abit longer and I think I may have repotted it 6+ months ago (either autumn here in Aus or winter, I dont actually remember).

It was fine throughout winter (southern hemisphere) and now as we are entering the end of spring/summer its been watered perhaps 2x/week when it isnt raining. Just started dying and standing right next to its brother. As a scientist I found that interesting and hence lead me to the conclusion that rather than environment perhaps it was an infection that caused it though of course I dont have a whole lot to go from on that. What are your thoughts?

Regarding the soil do you think that could have something to do with it?

Cheers for the help! :)

Nesh,
You stated it was fine after repotting. Did it grow after? Roots the same as bro? Was he repotted at the same time?

I was worried about contaminated soil but that weed is ok. So?    ???

Since it is likely dead. I would pull it out, to literally, get to the bottom of this.

My guess is root rot. But that healthy one has the answers. Consider all their differences.
"right next to" could have been directly under a downspout that poured into only him.

Watering 2 times a week sounds like leaving it wet a bit too long.  That soil looks like it would stay wet for 2 weeks.
I would use something that dries in a day or less.

Please share more info.

Nesh, Welcome to the site. May I offer a thought. Individuals are more likely to be able to help and want to help if they know a few things. The easy way to get that info out is to fill in your 'PROFILE' in the banner above. No need to give us your street address but some info is helpful.
In addition some on this site will not view pictures that are linked to, rather than posted directly here. Please in the future post your pictures here.
just my two cents
Jay

On the other hand I have junies and cypress's that turn anywhere from yellow to golden brown in the winter. Did you have it last winter. Obviously not . Check the roots and if all looks well just hope like hell.

Watered two times a week!!  Not enough water.  Understanding this it is surprising the other one is still alive.
