Title: Itoigawa Shimpaku Show Tree
Post by: John Kirby on December 14, 2009, 07:09 PM
I purchased this tree from Janet Roth (a fellow BIB member) 31/2 years ago. It was in need of a makeover and it has an excellent line. Janet had shown it in the BIB show and GSBF show in 2004, and it was featured on the cover of "Golden Statements" the GSBF magazine in January 2005. It was in the top 50 Bonsai in the JAL contest in 2004. When I got the tree it had a good deal of tip damage and just need to be cleaned up and allowed to rest. In the fall of 2007 Boon and I discussed this tree at length and I said that I would like to show the tree, but that I didn't want to show the tree using the front that Janet and Daisaku Nomoto had selected for it, I wanted to turn it around and make the back the front. Boon said that he had alway wanted Janet to use the old back as the front so we started to restyle the tree, some branch removal, redevelopment of a new shari and pulling the apex back to facilitate the new front. I wired the tree to make the new front work (took a few sessions.... lots of little branches) and it has filled in enough to be shown this year. To get ready for show the tree will be repotted in January, there is a slight 10 degree or so shift in planting position to set the new front, deadwood treated with Lime sulphur and the branches repositioned (aka Tweaked) for the show.

This is a good sized tree- about 24" tall or so.

Here is the juniper after repotting, cleanup, lime sulphur and mossing for the 2010 BIB show. I am very pleased with how it is turning out, and hank Janet for giving me the opportunity to acquire and work on it.
