Title: Itoigawa shimpaku - fall work on refined tree.
Post by: boon on October 02, 2009, 04:08 PM
this is a Itoigawa shimpaku that received 'members' choice award'  for small size tree (kifu) this January from Bay Island Bonsai member.
it was shown in an old pot.  after the show it was planted in Jim Gremel pot.  first pic is before work  next is half way though and finished.  the last pic show how thin it is after work.  from the front it still looks full.  more than half of the foliage wass removed.

fall works involve thinning old interior needles, then thin the tips of the branches. hanging downward branches (below horizontal line on the bottom of the pad) and needles were also removed.

Boon,

Thanks for the information. Thought you'd like to see one of my itiogawa shimpaku that is similar. This one was purchased from Don at Gregory Beach Bonsai and today is 5 3/4 inches tall. I have owned it for about a year. I will be working on thinning the canopy and refining the pads as well. As I said love how yours turned out and I am hoping for similar results.

JRob

Hi Boon, this tree looks fantastic, thanks for sharing.

At a repotting workshop in Virginia back in March, you helped me with a kishu shimpaku I bought from Gary and Mas Ishii.  My tree is structured similarly to the one you posted - you had recommended doing a few things next year to start the styling, and from these pictures, I now have a good idea of what to do.

Thanks again for sharing.

Very nice work.
Have you thought of making the shari a little bit wider?
