Title: Some early blooms to share
Post by: donmaple on April 13, 2012, 02:54 PM
Well, with all the mild weather here, my Satzuki's look like they are going to bloom early. Here is a preview of things to come. The first one is a new procurement, I have been eyeing this one for some time. It was in a small garden at my church and we took in the small garden to put in a larger Memorial garden. The garden designers didn't find this shrub pretty enough for the new garden. Just my luck! So it was given to me. It is a small shrub and I will have to reduce it. But since I haven't seen this variety for sell much, I am going to air layer off the branches that I will be removing. I believe it is Komane, the blooms are described as camellia-like and you can see why. That is my grubby little finger for referance.

Here are a few more that have popped a bloom or two. The first of this group is Higasa these blooms are monsters. The next is it's sister plant named Tama-no-Hada. The blooms are not quite as large but i like the deep coral color more. And the last is Waka-Ebisu. I really like the coral of this one, and apparently so do the caterpillars, if you look close you can see the damage to the bloom.

Beautiful flowers.  I really like the Komane, which seems pretty unique.  Thanks for sharing.

I'm glad I'm not the only one.  My Gyoten decided earlier was better as well.

Another bloom on Karen opened today after the cold snap earlier in the week and 2 days of rain. Everything was returned to the benches Thursday.

Well I think I got lucky again! I bought this little Satzuki primarily for it's small leaves although it did have one small bloom that caught my eye. That was back in October when I went to the Show at North Carolina Arboritum. Could not resist a stop by Green Thumb Bonsai. Found two very tiny leafed Satzuki's which are blooming now. I love plants with lots of variety on the blooms and this one may be my new favorite. Just look at all the variety on one SMALL Satzuki. Don

The Variety is labeled as Yochibu but I cant find any info on it. Here is one more pic of that plant. The next two are from the other Satzuki from Green Thumb and it is labeled Kokinsai. I think Kokinsai means mini-Kinsai and it looks like it. Enjoy, Don.
