Satusuki Azalea Kinsai

This tree was imported from Japan last year (or possibly the year before.) It was kept in a greenhouse and, in an effort to allow the roots to (re)establish after import, the tree was allowed to grow freely. It quickly overgrew and I didn't get around to thinning it until this weekend. I finished it today.
I was about a month late on this work, and it may've been completed at the expense of next year's blooms, but I figured it needed doing. With Satsukis being basally dominant, I purposefully pruned/thinned the apex less than the rest of the tree. I thinned it back to two branches at a juncture, and two leaves on branches for the most part. Not knowing how it was going to respond since this is about a month later than is recommended, I tended to leave a little more growth.
The photos show about 3-3.5 hours of work. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It probably could stand some wire. I can't imagine how long a process that is going to be.

Nice satsuki, kinsai is another great variety. From the information you gave us I would recommend wiring in the fall. Looks like a whole day project. Once you wire those small branches in the foliage pads down and get a little movement going, this could be a neat tree. Keep us updated.

Did you ever get any wire on this one, Wayne? How's it doing? Blooming yet?

No wire. It wasn't exactly vigorous (but I'm not sure that cultivar ever really is) so I didn't do much else last year. I'll try to get pictures soon.

An update as promised. It looks like July 28th is too late in the year to cut and NOT risk chopping off buds. Hence, this one isn't blooming this year, but does seem to have improved vigor-wise. I'm certain that's not a coincidence. A lucky accident maybe (, if you consider not having any blooms lucky that is).
Sorry I didn't get pictures.
