Satsuki Azalea 'Gyoten'
« on: May 31, 2010, 11:10 AM »
Here's my big Gyoten nearly in full bloom.  I took this photo before leaving for Brussel's Bonsai Rendezvous 2010 hoping that it would be in full bloom when I returned.  Returned home to find all the rain and heat and sun took it's toll on the blooms.  Now to remove the flowers, trim, thin, and wire.

My wife doesn't understand why I bother to keep azaleas if I'm going to pull the flowers off.

This one looks very healthy.  I'm interested to see what it looks like in the coming weeks.

John,

Perhaps we have reached satsuki enlightenment when we can see the flowers even when they are not there! I have been working hard to train my eye to look at a tree and see what it will be years down the road.

John,

Interesting thought but as a Shohin devotee if I was going to quote Yoda I would have said "Size matters not. Look at me. Judge me by my size do you? Hmm? Hmm. And well you should have not."

Back to the thread at hand.

John C.

As I said I really like this tree. Since I am new to bonsai i was wondering on this satsuki will you attempt to get a more balanced display of the flower colors by selective branch saving to distribute the darker pink more evenly to the left side of the tree or does it not matter?

I have been tagging my branches on my satsuki Karen in attempt to balance flower color and pattern more evenly.

It's still in development.  There were some large trouble branches near the top-back that were removed and I'm growing out that area to allow it to fill in.  It had been several years since I allowed it to flower and the wife was missing the blooms.  So, flower this year and likely not again for a few years to allow the branches to develop.  At that time I'll start tagging and selecting for color.
