This is a satsuki that I purchased from Dave Kreutz a couple months ago. It had a cut on the top of the trunk that was never properly sealed. Water got in and rotted most of the inside trunk. Dave took a dremel to it and drilled off all the rotted wood. The pictures you see today are the result. The variety is eikan. This is a really special tree in my opinion.

The first pic shows the tree as I bought it. The second an third are after I cleaned it up the way dave taught me, but that is for a different topic, and the last is the trunk itself.

Enjoy

I purchased a pot for this a couple days ago from Erin bonsai. The pot dimensions are 10.5"x7.75"x2.25". Vic has great pots, and although I usually prefer a good tokoname or good chinese pot, vic creates some very unique pots. Below is the pot I purchased. Cool tree and very nice pot.  You would think there would be more hollow trunked azalea bonsai around, but this is the first one I've seen.  I look forward to seeing it again once you've refined the foliage pads and placed it in your pot.

Shimsuki,
This is an excellent piece of material. I can see it becoming a showstopper very soon.

Shimsuki,
Very nice! Do you know the approximate age of the tree? Is it an import? I'm also curious as to the care of the hollowed out trunk. Is it treated with a preservative of any kind?  Thanks, Vic

It is hard to tell the age of satsukis.

No no no, preservatives, like lime sulfur, do not react well with azaleas. The only thing I do to take care of the hollowed trunk is pick away soft wet wood. Since there are not many carved azaleas like this, I am still figuring out how to really care for it.
