What do you spray your Azalea with? Pesticide/fungicide
« on: November 04, 2013, 10:47 AM »
I believe i've heard that using diluted lime sulfur is not good to spray on Spruce and Azalea, but I’m not exactly sure why?  I was also wondering what you use for Dormate spray as well as general year round for pesticide/fungicide? thanks!

That's a pretty broad question.  I would use horticultural resources on the internet like University publications and profiles of a given species.  There's also a book called The Ortho Problem Solver that has both identification keys for diseases and treatment.  They are obviously biased towards their product lines but finding the active ingredient is all that really matters.  Local time-tested bonsai people are also good to consult as some chemicals don't have the same efficacy in each area.  I used to be certified to spray spaceman suit level stuff and relied partially on chemical reps for advice as there is often something new to try.

Sorry Owen, I more so was trying to ask what do you use specifically for Azalea and is it any different from what you spray on everything else?  I’m wondering if certain sprays affect or hurt Azalea that would be fine to use for other types of trees?  Personally I alternate every few months between a few pesticides and fungicides and spray once/month.  I recently purchased a weak Imported Azalea and I want to try and give it the best chance of survival.

For azaleas, there are many chemicals used.  One is called Precise.  This comes in prills similar to Osmocote in form but smells a lot worse.  This is applied to the media surface and acts systemically on Azalea Lace Bug.

Frankly I avoid health issues by growing in pure kanuma as azaleas tend to crater once really stressed; it may take it 3 years of sequential branch death but generally happens.  Root rot issues are are to cure and often require removing chunks of the root system showing symptoms.  I do not advise buying sick / stressed azaleas.

To elaborate, the kanuma allows for good aeration, pH is dead on, and repotting is easier avoiding stress there.  Fungicide rotations (like 3 different ones on 10-14 day intervals) help azaleas stressed by root rot or other root issues.  You can take a sample of roots and media (kept moist) and have it tested to identify the culprit.  Triflumizole, Thiophanate Methyl, and Mefenoxam are a few fungicides for root rot which is not just caused by Phytothera, but other fungal pathogens as well.

Owen, you mentioned Precise last week as well.  I found the active ingredient to be Acephate(?), and that ingredient under a different brand name.  Is the ingredient correct, or can you share a source for Precise?
Thanks

Yep.  It's Acephate.  Smells like really bad.  I got mine from a commercial pesticide vendor.
