3 Azaleas - Where to next
« on: December 18, 2014, 09:09 AM »
Hi

I have 3 azaleas that I have been keeping in small pots for the last 3-4 years.  They have been through a rough journey as all of them have died back a few times but have all recovered every-time.

Last week I decided that I had to really try to achieve something with them so I planted them all out into a large barrel that I have in my garden (Around the recently purchased Japanese maple).  The reason for this is to hopefully get them to grow larger so that I have good material to work with.

Am I right on the right track?

I don't think so, if you are thinking this will make them grow faster. Azaeas have a very shallow root system. Roots form into a dense pad of fine 'hairs' which, on their own, don't spread far behond the edge of the canopy and 3 or 4 cm deep (your 'little pots' are actually much larger than they need to be for your azaleas). They grow at virtually the same rate bound in a small pot as in the ground. The principle difference is that they require a bit less attention in the ground.

Stems are slow to thicken. But the same principles apply as for making trunks of any tree. It is just a bit more difficult because azaleas tend to low spreading forms instead of the thin upright shoot form of most trees used for bonsai. Meanwhile, enjoy the flowers!

Thanks for the information.  :)

Oh Well...  I will leave them in the pot for now and next spring put them back in the small pots.

If the objective is to grow wood for the next couple years, pinch off the flower buds. Flowering uses a lot of energy, which would be redirected into growth.

Just a update on the Azaleas.

They have grown nicely over the last few months but I can see that they are slow growers.

All of the azaleas have produced flower buds all over them but I have plucked them all with the exception of one bud per plant.  Strangely enough I cannot remember what the flowers look like on 2 of them and my need to satisfy my curiosity.

They seem to be loving the area where I planted them out and get mainly afternoon sun.
