The Beauty of Bonsai - Yamamoto

(1/1)

JRob:
Good Morning Everyone,

One of my Christmas presents this year was "The Beauty of Bonsai - A Guide to Displaying and Viewing Nature's Exquisite Sculpture" by Junsun Yamamoto, Preface by Masahiko Kimura published by Kodansha International 2010. List price $29.95. it has 95 pages.

It is a great book and well worth it's reasonable price. It's photos and text are great and it is a wonderful introduction to the art of displaying and viewing bonsai as it's title suggests. It does a really fine job of defining the Japanese terns of the traditional Japanese art form and is of value to both the experienced practitioner and someone just coming into the the fold. I wish I had picked it up sooner.

There is a fantastic glossary of terms, a brief section on the distinctive delights of Shohin Bonsai Pots detailing 16 potters with examples of their skill (only regret is the author does not show their chops but they are available on internet sites), discussions on how to set up displays that are season specific and much more. Chapter 4 is dedicated to the creative bonsai of Masahiko Kimura which is fascinating.

Does anyone else have any comments if you have the book?

JRob

William N. Valavanis:
I agree, this book has beautiful photos of bonsai masterpieces from Kobayashi's Shunka-en Bonsai Museum, Masahiko Kimura and Susumu Sudo at the Keido Display Headquarters. Many of the bonsai are not "formal" photographs, but rather on display in the garden or tokonoma. The way the Japanese appreciate how to display a bonsai is very interesting and I've never seen it anywhere in English print. It even gives guides how to welcome a visitor to your home to view bonsai.

Shohin bonsai, their beauty and how to display is thoroughly covered with great photos as well. I highly recommend this book for those who want to appreciate bonsai and want to get some great tips on display. It is not written as an instructive book showing techniques for shaping or information on care.

I have the book in stock, $35 postpaid in US.
