Title: Weird Black spot on my Maple... Should I be worried?
Post by: LarryAldrich on February 26, 2014, 01:00 AM
Should this spot bother me? I noticed it today while pruning. It's slightly softer than surrounding tissue.  But not by much.

Thanks
Larry Aldrich
Seattle WA (where things are already blooming)

Looks like you can cut it back to good wood and paste it over.

Doesnt look to bad.

I would worry about the case of scale you have... looks like an infestation.  You can use a cotton swab with rubbing alcohol and make sure you get every one of them.

Thanks I'm treating the tree. I didn't recognize the spots as scale.

Same thing happened to me last summer Larry, I thought it was just bark on mine, little striations.... But no, it was nasty scale... I actually just scraped each one off, but mine wasn't quite as abundant as yours looks to be.
