This is a shishigashira maple that got airlayered yesterday. I had never performed an airlayer before, so my friend brian at Cass Bonsai showed me. It might make a nice shohin one day.

The steps that were used to make this airlayer are on my blog at http://shimsuki.blogspot.com/2010/03/japanese-maple-air-layer.html as well as large pictures when they are clicked on.

Is this Shishi on it's own roots or is it grafted?

I am not sure. My guess would be that it was an airlayer at one time.

I'm pretty sure the pictures do show a graft union low on the trunk.
