I can't come up with a title that doesn't seem to condescend
« on: February 04, 2016, 09:49 AM »
Here's a Japanese maple that doesn't seem to fit the mold of what most strive for.  It's years from presentable, but I like it('s potential).  Any input on making it better?

Sorry, nothing from me.

But I would like to see how this develops.

Personally, I like Japanese Maples in the bunjin style. You don't see many of them.

Owen trained a beautiful Japanese Maple that I would classify as bunjin which I think was in one of the exhibitions. It should be somewhere on this site.

I like your start.

(Owen's)the tree to which I referring is in the Bonsai Shows Discussion section, 6th entry from the top entitled "Carolina Expo 2014" by bwayneref. The Japanese Maple is on page 4. (Sorry, I'm not able to cut and paste this photo.)

I really love this tree.

This tree was also at 2014's National Exhibition. The book lists it at 15" tall, and in grew in a training pot for just a couple of years before Owen created this.

It was all the more striking for the predominance of powerful trees that we see at major (and minor) shows.

Wayne,

Yes, that is the tree. IMO this tree illustrates an ideal in bonsai, it creates an elegant image with minimalism like a Zen brush painting.

Thanks for posting the image. Thanks Owen!

I'd remove the thick top branch with the white wire on it and use a side branch on the left for a new apex.  It will create better taper for a small tree.  If the leaves of this tree are large, perhaps keep it the same height.

Thanks for the kind words all.  A lot of bonsai in America are overt power trees.

Are both the branches you're talking about ones with the white wire?  Remove the right fork and keep the left?

That is what I'd do.  You'll have to resolve the straight section below that fork.  Not sure where the "front" is for you.

I appreciate "feminine" trees.

If you are also a fan I suggest the book "Four Seasons of Bonsai" by Kyuzo Murata.
