Title: Fertilizing for maples?
Post by: Christopher on June 13, 2011, 11:12 PM
Need some direction. Trying to figure out the best fertilizing technique for several a. Palmatum. Should I follow Peter Adam's suggestions in his book, or go with a simple 5-5-5 all purpose organic cake mix? Any advice will be most appreciated.

Cakes are fine...they are slow release, feed the tree every time it is watered, but will need to be replenished periodically throughout the growing season.  I don't use them because they gunk up my soil.  I apply a combination of full strength miracle gro or peters along with fish/seaweed emulsion every 5-7 days.  Ultimately, it doesn't matter what you use as long as you feed aggressively, assuming you want alot of growth for styling.
