Title: Acer japonicum "Aconitifolium"
Post by: JRob on March 21, 2015, 03:08 PM
This morning I stopped at my favorite nursery. I just love the place - Crabapple Cove. Got a great deal on this Acer japonicum 'Aconitifolium'. The common name is Fern-leaf maple. The nursery was busy and is real close to my house. I have been going there for almost 30 years and have become friends with the owner. A crowd gathered at I chopped the trunk and shortened the root ball to get it in my car. A good time to advance the cause of bonsai. Several said they'd come to the next club meeting.I am hoping they do.

The Japanese name of this tree is Maiku jaku which means dancing peacock. The leaves of this bold form are multi-divided and deeply cut. Each leaf has 11 lobes but may vary on the same plant from 7 to 13. The leaves vary from 7 to 17 cm long and 6 to 14 cm wide. The white and maroon blossoms are quite prominent on this cultivar and are more striking than their counterparts on most maples. Another desirable feature of this cultivar is the intense fall coloration. Brilliant scarlet tones develop, shaded with carmine and sometimes into the purple range. The leaves persist on the plant giving a long fall show. The prominent seeds, held in clusters of samaras and color maroon red in the fall, add to the attractiveness. Although the foliage is large it is not a course tree. The cultivar has received the RHS Award of Garden Merit. Spent several hours this morning getting it out of the nursery soil and into a good bonsai soil. The tree will be kept larger than I usually keep mine and currently is 22" - 56cm with a base circumference of 9" - 23 cm. I planted the tree to commemorate my older son's ordination to the ministry that happened the end of February.

That looks like a great project.  I look forward to seeing it in person.  I will have to visit Crabapple Cove; never been their before and it is just down the road.

A new picture in leaf with the sun setting. I think I am really going to enjoy this long-term project. JRob
