Very nice, Ken.  I love the pot, too.  Can you tell us how long this tree has been in training?

Do you find that the bark turns grey faster in the ground or in a bonsai pot?

Nick,
The bark on some Japanese maples stays green for many years in the ground or in a pot.
This is one that seems to do that. I have others that turn brown and then gray in a pot.

Ken, are your trees waking up?  I'd imagine this one's buds are about to explode or its begun leafing out

Hey Ken,
I wouldn't mind seeing a picture of this one when the leaves are about half opened.
I like the feel of this tree- kind of an understated elegance. I have several red maples on my place that have this look.

Hi Wayne, some of my Japanese Maples are starting to leaf out, hope we do not get a late freeze, the first ones to start leafing out are the Kashimas, Katsuras and the kotohimes. I have a big Katsura planted in the front yard and it leafs out before any of my other Japanese Maples every year, it looked great last year for the first time in years, no freezes after the leaves came out.

Hi Jay, thank You for your kind words. I am just starting to see the buds crack open on this tree, a few more warm sunny days and the leaves will be coming out like the  Katsuras. The Japanese trees that we grow think that it is Spring but all of our native trees are still sleeping they know that it can still be a freeze this time of year and later.

Hi Shim, thank You for your kind remarks. This Maple is a Kiyohime grown from a cutting about 15 years ago.

Here is little Kiyohime that I have had for about 2 years. Got it from Green Thumb Bonsai. These things have one of the smallest leaves I've seen. I just let it grow in it's nursery container till this year. I love this pot and thought the little fella looked right at home in it. Time to start trimming and training. Don

Hi Don, with You being about a hundred miles south of me it looks like your Kiyohime is about a week ahead of mine.

When I got home from work today I took some pics of new Maple leaves. It very over cast here now so the pics are not very bright, no flash.
The first one is a Kashima, number two is a Katsura and the last one is a Kotohime.

Ken, you have quite the variety. Love those Katsura leaves, great color. I have a small grafted one that I bought last year. It is really small and the buds are about to open but not quite yet. I have a little bigger Kotohime (I think) that I have been dragging around for years. Plan to airlayer the tops off this spring and start to train it. I hope to post the process for all to see. Don.

Hi Don, I like the Spring colors on Maples also. It is rare for me to get good fall colors so I enjoy the spring very much.
Here is a better pic of bright Maples.

Really nice Ken. Thanks!  Wish I could grow J. maples here. My red maples get some good color sometimes, but they don't have the elegance. :'(

Thank You Jay and You are welcome.
Can You grow Tridents? I have tried to grow Red Maples, did not have much success, they never looked a good as the ones that I have see You post. Chalk Maple is one that should make a good Bonsai. I have a few but they are far from being good trees, they seem to be a bit course like Red Maples.
