hi people  Grin

i am about to plunge into the world of pine bonsai, i havent had much experience with them but want to figure it all out.
i am wondering what are peoples thoughts on the best cultivar of JBP would be best for a shohin size tree? i am restricted to shohin sized trees as i have slipped discs in my back, but thats another story.

i have loved the look of pines since i started bonsai 5 years ago and now feel confident enough to take them on as a new challenge in my journey.

i will be buying 1 or 2 shortly but thought best to ask this question first.

i absolutely love J. white pine but know they will not like my climate at all, i do know JBP will though so i think thats my best option Smiley

Jamie, you are on the right track by looking at your climate. But also look at what you can change about your climate. You can't change the temperature but you can protect your trees from excessive cold. You can't really decrease humidity but you can increase it. But mostly look at what you are willing to do. Also look for species that grow in similar climate to yours from around the world, and if you can find other bonsai-ists in your area ask what experiences they have had with species you are interested in. Just use good ole plain JBP, if you see mikawa they can be quite good. The key thing is to manage them to be small trees, getting good radial roots, branches, or grafting points down low, some movement and taper.

i dont get an overly cold weather spurt generally it gets to mid teens celcius at its coldest period, during the rest of the year it is quite warm generally ranging from 20c-35c all year round. the humidity is what goes up and down. i have a lot of ficus, ond other tropical or sub tropical and some temperate trees. elm, juniper go well here but maple wont work at all.

people in my local are around 1-2 hours away some grow JBP others dont, its a ranging climate.

thanks for the mikawa option thats what i was after in terms of ideas, i know JBP  will grow here i just dont have the experience.

i havent got the pics yet but i have a few trees offered to me, some of the standard JBP and the other of the yatsubusa variety.

after reading a bit on yatsabusa they seem to be everything i am after in a shohin tree, tight needles, short internodes, compact foliage.

if any one has yatsabusa in training or whichever stage i would love to see them, just to see what i am comparing to, the stock i will be getting has been ground grown for approx. 10-15 years i think. i find out details tonight Smiley

here is one of the JBP i will be getting, i havent got it yet but its on its way. its not a yatsasuba just mikawa.

height 25cm reducable to 18cm

very nice. a few years and you will have a very nice tree. In the pot it should get some bark to suggest age.

i agree with the bark that it needs to age up, it is just starting to now so it will be there in the next few years i think Smiley

now i just need to learn how to keep it alive!
