What would you do with 300 JBP seedlings?
« on: January 27, 2015, 01:35 PM »
Let's call this a theoretical question.  Suppose you have 300 (or some large number) jbp seedlings sprouted spring of 2014.  What would you do with them?  What would you plant them in?  What styles would you grow them in?  How aggressive would you be?

I would be very aggressive. As to cull the weaker ones.

I would try to grow a couple of the strongest ones in each form. Definitely exposed root, formal upright.

Having recently read (again) about wind forces building trunk tissue, I would probably do something crazy to some......

Tie a balloon on to it, so it gets moved by the slightest wind. Put a windmill in the pot, so it always gets
Whacked, keeping it moving. If I had the means, a strong fan on a timer, or water jets.

Grow one upside down like a topsy turvy Tomato planter.

Maybe try to fuse a few, or twist them up.

An ROR.
A lot of stuff for s&g.

And it would all be for Sparta. Poke a God king with a needle and watch him bleed.

Sell some (to compensate for the cost of soil and containers), place some in pond baskets or colander. Others after rootwork together in big flat. Some on stone, some in container to develop exposed roots? First setting the base and roots, then look for growing out? Use some for experimenting with grafting later... Plant a few in the ground as garden tree?

If you colendar them, don't bother with the double colendar. I just bought a JBP that was ground grown at Boon's, DNS is now in a colander.

His growing medium was mostly pumice, in a raised bed.

The iPhone 6 auto-correct has a mind of it's own!

It somehow changed "and" into "DNS".

Put half of them in the ground!  And drive up I95 and put the other half in the ground on my 7 acres.  Plenty of room.

See the two pines in the pond baskets?

They were in small pots, then grown in the ground in raised pumice beds for two years, now in pond baskets. They're about 6 years old.

Those two were on the auction tables at BIB. He had several more for sale.

I think whacking by windmills and Topsy turvy planters are by far the most innovative and interesting techniques I've ever heard.
  Man dude!

John, if that's the price I have to pay to hang around with you, it's worth it!

Been thinking about topsy turvy since reading its hard to train a cascade.

You ever see the weed carousel?  That could work too!
