Two more JBPs- this time cascades.....
« on: June 22, 2010, 12:12 AM »
Here are a couple of JBP cascades that I have that reside out at Boon's. These trees were once owned by Boon, sold and hen floated around the bonsai comunity. They wen fro being show trees to rather weak trees. My friend Peter Tea purchased them, got them stronger and then sold them to me. The first tree has really popped ak after repotting, decandling, a workshop with Akio Kondo and now is ready for decandling again. W cut one of the three roots in the front of the pot and are working towards having the tree moved well towards the center of the pot and a steeper cascade within 3 years.  Pictureas are before and after decanling.

The second tree was a Boon tree and was in early BIB shows and was a members choice award winner. It was sold and fell on hard times, it is gaining strength, was lightly decandled and should be back in form within a couple of years. The pictures are before and after work.th

Both of these trees are imports and are very old, the deadwood is natural and  interesting. Guess this just shows that regular and thoughtful care is required, and that a tree that has fallen in to neglect is more than worthy of the cre it takes to make them whole again.

Cheers,
John

Oh yeah, both trees are in Tokoname-Yama'aki pots.

Nice work again John.  Glad they found a good home.

The second one you posted is really cool.  Are you planning to keep the dead branch?  I think it gives the tree character and makes it unique compared to most of the other JBPs out there.

More than likely the branch will become a jin, just haven't thought too much about how long, etc. This tree was spectacular when it had the lower branch still alive, it will be a very nice tree when done again, Boon treats it like an old, long lost, friend who has been found. Will be fun to watch this tree develop over the next 2-3 years.

Fall work completed. The older tree was just a little too weak to do much with, will get it pushing harder next year.

The second tree was worked for fall and is coming along nicely, the wire need to come off this winter. Was able to cut the second of he three roots that emerge mid trunk, the last one will go next year, then the tree can be planted in the middle of the pot.

Here are two more recent pics of the first cascade.  One before and one after I decandled it and thinned out the buds at the Summer Intensive.  I hope you like my work, John.

Very nice Adair, you are learning the arcane art of Black Pine Maintenance! I saw the tree when I was in California to decandle the little one's the first weekend in July. I thought that I had posted an update after we cut the last big root off in January 2012. Anyway, has come along very nicely. Thanks for the help, had some family things come up that forced me to cancel an intensive trip.

The second tree is also coming along, this tree was much weaker than the other. This year we were able to do a complete decandling, base witing and now a repot into a slightly larger pot. It is fun to watch goodold trees come back.

Adair, repotted it back in to the Yama'aki pot it was in previously, was a little difficult to get it out of this pot- but we prevailed! It will be showable again in a few years.

That's a killer tree john. You guys have gotten the needles and growth to a nice proportion. I am a big fan of that deadwood feature.
