Title: trouble picking a front.....JBP
Post by: Bonsaiguru on September 14, 2011, 03:15 PM
As I am getting close for the Fall work, I'm trying to pick a front. Picking a front is my weakest area (which I'm improving little by little). Once the front is picked I have no problem getting great results, but it is the foundation of picking a front that I lack in....any suggestions would be greatly appreciated....

From the pictures, I would suggest your image 1706, or something close to it.

I would tend to agree, 1706 is a good choice, or the reverse 1705.

You have a great start on this tree, plenty of girth for the height and some well placed branches.  I would begin by looking at trunk movement.  1705 and 1706 both show a bit of movement in the lower trunk with the main branch arise off the outside of the turn.  Your leader is well positioned from either of these fronts. I would then ask about nebari, or the roots.  Good all the way around, or does your decision need to account for a root problem?  Lastly, you might want to clean things up, loosing the branches below and opposite your first branch.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the feedback, I was thinking 1706 as well, but 1705 was another choice I have. My only issue with 1706 is that there is really no branches on the left side, I know I can probably work it out when I prune and wire this fall, but that seems like an open space, but I will see in fall what I can do. Thanks again.

I feel that JBP should have strong roots, so your decision should be made by the widest, best looking base then grow your branches from there.
