Recent Addition - Pinus thunbergii var. corticosa
« on: June 13, 2012, 05:54 PM »
Good Afternoon All,

Must be the month to add a cork bark black pine based on the previous post. I already own one and picked up another this past weekend when my teacher was in town working with the STL Study group. Michael and I decided to turn this into a long term project. The tree was purchased from Cass Bonsai Gardens. The tree has potential and issues. This Nishiki-matsu was imported from Japan about 7 years ago from Takamatsu, Kagawa on the island of Shikoku, Japan near the Seto Inland Sea. The species was "discovered" in 1894. Brian Van Fleet has a good deal of information about them on his website and blog. The first order of priority is to get the tree good and healthy before any work is done. It will be repotted next spring in a grow pot to aid in improving its overall condition. As many of you know one of my main points is to buy the trunk - everything else can be changed over time. It will be interesting to see what time and guidance from Michael can be done with this piece of material.
