I understand that the current thinking is to withhold fertilizer after decandling to prevent long needles.  Since I'm a ways off from caring about needle reduction, is there any harm in going ahead and fertilizing?  My only concern would be if that fertilization would cause necks on the candles (like the spring candles) where there are no buds?

Thoughts?

Go head and fertilize it, lightly now, add more in a couple of weeks. You are really just trying to feed the interior buds to get them to pop. I have done this many times with field grown trees with leggy branches. If you don't get buds popping inside this year, then approach graft in what you need at key spots. John
