Just got this in today. Spent a month paying on it and now it is here. Aquired this tree from Davesbonsai(D. Weaver). The tree itself is George Muranaka stock. Dave already wired this pine so I'm not the one who wired it. I believe Dave said he has had this pine a couple of yrs. He actually had this tree listed twice with no takers. So I contacted him knowing he was in need of cash. I was in need of some good stock that I could afford. So, to me, it worked out well.
 Dims: 10 inches tall, 12 inches wide, 3 inch trunk and 6 inch nebari(even though ya don't see it) and estimated at 20 yrs of age. All are his dimensions not mine. Will check those though.
 Dave listed it as a Shohin and said he did some research and found 10" is the cutoff point. I wouldn't be disappointed if it wasn't Shohin.

Here are a few pics of the repot done at our club meeting on Feb 27th. I want to get the roots better and the tree more healthy so I purchased this mica drum at the meeting. Yes it is oversized a tad but I don't think this tree is ready for a bonsai pot. I still have a ways to go with this tree. I changed the planting angle to where I want it. I then worked on removing some ugly roots that bulge from the base. One of our members suggested, after asking me where I wanted to go with the tree, of a semi-cascade. That possibility may save the left branch. I know as an informal upright(before the angle change) that branch sits too low on the trunk. I'd hate to graft and be set back further in developing this tree. Anyway, thought I'd show updates.

I think you made a much better pot choice in the end. Once the roots are under control, I'd look for a similar slightly smaller drum pot.

The yellow pot was a bit garish for such a wabi sabi tree.

you're looking in the wrong places for drum pots. Skip the typical Tokoname drums and be a little more adventurous:

Bryan Albright and Dan Barton in the UK make outstanding variations of drum pots and rounds. I have a huge grey glazed rivet pot from albright that is one of my favorites.

Ron Lang, Dale Cochoy, Sara Raynor here in the US make excellent non-conformist drums and subtle rounds too.

Nice pine - looks very happy with all that candle growth.  I think with the earlier than normal warm weather, my pines (JBPs, Ponderosas, white) are a few weeks ahead of where they normally are in the growing season, as I've got lots of long candles on my JBPs and white pines, and my ponderosas are going nuts with new growth as well.

I think you're right about the issues you would face about turning this tree into a semi-cascade.  It's too bad that long branch isn't higher up on the trunk.  But otherwise, I think it looks nice with where you are taking the tree now.

Now here it is today. Since repotting back in Feb I have been feeding aggressively and watering this tree pretty much to get to this point. Today was supposed to be our study group meeting but since other members went to BLC or just did not come to the meeting today I took my pine upto John's and spent time with him. After decandling my JBP I helped John trimming various trees to keep them in a general shape. Also, in a way, I collected a BC(one of several) at the back of his property to mess with. Man, those roots were a pita Anyway, 3 pics before decandling coming up
