I purchased this tree from George Muranaka last week.  I received it on monday.  It my first decent black pine.

As you say, a decent tree!  :) Congratulations.

Maybe it's the pictures, but the needles look quite short already. Is this a named variety?

No, its not.   The needles are short.  Looks like he cut off the terminal buds on all the branches.  So it will just be food and water till next spring.

Andrew, it's hard to tell from the pictures, are the branches that are on the tree, in a desired place or are you going to have to try to back bud for smaller branches and better ramification?  Just curious.

Repotted this tree in spring of 2012 in Boon's Mix.  I  make balls with Holly Tone, and foliar feed weekly with Miracle Grow. I decandled today.

Its coming along nicely, won't be long and it could go into a bonsai pot.
