Intensive work
« on: June 06, 2014, 03:46 PM »
Here's my JBP I keep at Boon's. I still need to finish wiring the apex.

Before decandling, and after.

This is a really nice tree Adair, I can see it much better with these photos than the previous ones.  You must be pretty happy with it.

Adair, will you be teaching or leading the Atlanta Pine workshop at the end of June? I am not sure what the format will be for the June meeting.

Really nice.  I am curious about your plans with the bottom right branch and the one above it.

Keeping both. The bottom right comes from the back a little, and is pulled forward. It is the key branch. Since the tree leans right, the key branch should also go right.

The branch above will probably get three grafts to put secondary branches closer to the trunk. It will be after show season next year.

I plan to show this tree next January at the BIB show, then possibly at the Atlanta Bonsai Society show next spring.

Owen will you keep the length or shorten them?

There are interior branches/top branches that are almost ready to take the place of the terminal tips. This will shorten the branches a little. Really, that's regular long term maintenance.

This is a powerful tree, which I watched progress from strong and healthy to compact and refined over 2 days at Boon intensive. Standing 20-24" tall, trunk roughly 5" with mature bark and root spread of 10".  Adair, correct me if those estimates are off.  Was candle cut last year producing <2cm needles.  Wired, candle cut, reduced and refined by Adair and Boon.  It is a 9.5 as pictured now, and has all upside as this years needles fill in and refinement and profile are tidied up a bit over the next couple of years.  Great material, healthy horticulture and artistry produced an excellent result which is best appreciated in person, as with most bonsai.

I'd shorten them.

The next time I'm out at Boon's will be October. By then the summer candles will be mature and we will set their final positions for the show. It will be much fuller.

To be honest, all the branches on this tree are a little too long. I've owned this tree a year. The previous owner had let it get a little leggy, and Boon and I are getting it back in shape. We are cutting back and preselecting which interior branches will replace the current terminal tips for when we do cut back and shorten the branches.

Very keen observation, Don!

When the summer candles come in, it will have a fuller, softer look all over.
