Title: grafted pines
Post by: bonsaiTom on August 03, 2011, 07:38 AM
We know that JWP's are often grafted onto JBP root stock - an acceptable practice.  I have a couple questions.

Is the original black pine 'top' discarded, layered off and saved as a new tree, or what?

Having black pine roots is the combined tree any less hardy than a totally JWP would be?

I'm in a cold zone and need to know how to properly care for a newly purchased 'combo'.   ???

Thanks,
Tom

Done as small trees, scion on to seedling JBP. Nothing left to use. They are stronger in most climates than seedling JWP, but not as strong as JBP in Warm climates. I would treat it like a seedling JWP for the cold, should be fine with winter protection in NY.

John, Thanks, this helps. Our tree is likely 15-20 years old and nicely trained (pre bonsai) but new for us. Just purchased from New England Bonsai Gardens. Sorry no pics.

Were you on the trip with Bill V? I almost went over but had too much work to do clearing a spot for a polyhouse......

OH YEAH, and it was an awesome trip - Bonsai West, Royal Bonsai, (yes Suthin was there), dinner at a fabulous Japanese seafood buffet, Suthin joined us there too,  a terrific hotel stay then visits to New England Bonsai Gardens (substantial discounts at all three) and then a guided tour of the Larz Anderson Collection at the Arnold Arboretum at Harvard by curator Colin Lewis.

Two days packed full of "bonsai heaven".

 :D

One of the group took these pics and appropriately dubbed them our "Boston Tree Party"

Enjoy!
