Soil division
« on: January 16, 2014, 11:09 PM »
Hey!

when I get my soil I use a 3 piece sieve. Usually the soil mix (Boon's) has extremely small dust like particles. The smallest sieve picks those up. Do I still use that size for the top layer? because I usually throw it out. When I use my medium sieve  it usually picks everything out so I am barely left with largest size particles. Basically, my small sieve only picks up the dust particles, and my medium sieve picks up the small and medium. I'm usually left with a small amount of the large particles.

Depends on what you're growing, what your growing for, and what the inner diameter of the holes in your screen are.  I use three mesh sizes with hole diameters of 3/8", 1/4", and 1/8" to make two soil grades discarding grains sizes less than 1/8" and using particles greater than 3/8" for drainage. But you can substitute whatever hole diameter mesh that you prefer. I purchased the wire mesh from the Bellville Wire Cloth Company (http://www.bwire.com/index.html). They have everything you need for whatever soil sizes you prefer.
