Ulmus A/L pre separation
« on: July 09, 2014, 05:12 AM »
Started this a.l. for better nebari, shorter tree. I had a zip tie on it since fallish. after it swelled this spring, cut into it pretty deep, no hormone.

To get radial, I cut a little disc of plastic, notched it with a trunk hole and placed it just below the top of the cut. It seems to have worked, as there are tiny pink roots radiating all around, starting to grow down the outside of the pot.

Chopped it, (that excuse pruning J. Elder), and another pic of the roots.

Its about an inch and a quarter from the new roots to the first branch. I hope to keep it under 4 inches in the end.

The branches come off pretty straight and will fan up and out. This is responding very well to my vision. A little healing over my new KANESHIn cuts and these runners may get lopped with separation.

Collected as a seedling by the river a couple years ago. I caught a catfish and a couple smallmouth that day.

Sphagnum. Shred fine. Was placed under said disc to keep it in place. Then above it as well. The whole contraption was covered as seen with another container.

I have to water it upside down every 2 days. Kind of a pain.
