53 degrees at 4:30 this morning in central jersey... Going down to 7 tonight with wind chills near -10. I never had to deal with such low temps or such a swing in temps with my trees. I hope my winter preparations are good enough...

One thing, if you have trees in cheap Chinese glazed pots, you will get a chance to see the value of high fired pots.......

Ill be sure to let you know how they fair. We had 10 inches of snow on Friday and a lot of rain today. All th snow melted because of the temps and the rain. With all that moisture in the soil to freeze, I'm sure it won't be good.

I think you people who are devoted to bonsai if your young enough should all move to the west coast, find a job and live bonsai all year. How you can stand that horrid weather I will never know. I am a 62 year old ,lived on the coast all my life and have always wondered why you put up with it. Lots of opportunity out here and there is no reason not to.
Happy new year everyone

So I guess your trees have been exposed to pretty cold temps in previous winters (maybe not quite this cold). Have you ever seen any evidence of damage? It's 4 F outside right now with winds gusting to 40+ mph so it's going to be pretty cold in my garage and barn...not sure the heater in the barn shelter will be able to keep up.

Chris,
I didn't put plastic up until Thanksgiving weekend. Trees had seen several freezes and temps down to 15. The big thing I want the plastic to do is to protect the trees from the desiccating winds you can get, that kills trees faster than just about anything . In fact, when temps are going above 20 on sunny winter days, we open doors and windows. We run fans all the time, the goal is to keep trees cold as much as possible to keep them dormant and  protected until it is time to wake them up in the spring. Trees in the dark need to be cold/cool, you should be fine with adapted trees.

Gaffer , been there done that. Graduated from high school in the Willamette Valley. Got tired of 250 days of rain. Moved back to Oregon to finish Graduate School- Same thing. Lived in Seattle area while working at Sand Point NMFS facility, really hated the weather. We get 8 months of good weather, I can live with four tough ones. Plus, when I get the urge to do out of season things, I go to Hayward.

Gaffer, 'different strokes for different folks'.... the west coast has its points but don't sell the north east short.
Some of us love to complain but really love 4 true seasons ( 5 if you live in Vermont and have mud season). Also it is nice to be able to grow different species, I've yet to see a killer Larch in the South...South West or most of California.
Do our trees grow slower...Yes, but there are many of us who love it here.

As for me...I'm looking out my window at a lovely day. Presently 1 and likely to go up to 10F. I'm looking at the ski hill, just a few miles from my door. If I choose I can be skiing inside 15 minutes. Snowshoe or cross country. The seasons are our friends.

Oh... and if I'm correct, the west coast is 3 hours behind us...just saying. ;D

2 F this am just north of Atlanta.  Windows are iced over and schools are closed today due to the cold.  Trees are on the ground or stuffed under the deck and mulched with oak leaves.  Trees will be back on the benches by Thursday ;D.

lol Dave, that's what our house's windows look like too.  Thermostat set at 72 and it's 68 in the house.  Too many leaks in this 120 y/o house.  Thank goodness we go pounded with snow before these temps...my polyhouse is staying a nice 31...pretty impressed.
Just a few days more of these temps.

Amen to the snow that kept all my Windows insulated. It's actually so much warmer inside this year.

Bracing for the coldest yet this year here.  I only have a couple plants I'm worried about, one of them a Chinese quince, that is in the cold greenhouse. I've not seen temps here like this since I have had this tree, and some things I've read say keep from frost... I know they can take a freeze, but how far down is safe for them in a pot?  We are going to be -15 to -20 overnights, and a couple days not to get out of negative digits.  Should be fine with bottom heat right?  There is a small air heater in there, that keeps it from getting too far below freezing, but it hasn't been this cold here for some years, and I don't know how cold it will go as it can't keep up completely.
Anybody have experience with Chinese quince in the very cold?

Judy, mine have a few green leaves and have gone down to around 10F with no heat. You should be fine at 15+ F, probably even lower thanh that.

Good to know, thank you John.  Guess I'll find out how cold the BC's can get, they live outside in the winter in a mulch bench I built for them, along with the other cold hardy stuff.  They are the only thing I'm not sure of out there, I'm sure the larch  and crab will love it.
I did enclose the mulch bench with a tarp and hung a couple clip lights inside that I'll turn on at nights to create a little bit of warmth near the BC.  At least we have Plenty of snow, and I buried it all DEEP.
Hope everyone else survives the bitter cold that is coming.
