Title: So the weather outside is chilly.....
Post by: Jay on December 17, 2013, 08:19 AM
Thought I'd check in with the group and see how all are doing.
This morning I awoke to negative 19... rather cold for this time of year. Now Saranac Lake NY hit negative 26...that's cold!
Checked my trees. The ones in my (minimal) heated sun-room were seeing temps around 35 degrees. The ones in the garage on the heating grid are seeing the soil temps of high 20's. All is well.

I'm interested in hearing how everyone else is doing.......

We're at a, comparatively, toasty 39°F this morning.  I hope you get more replies along the lines of what you're looking for, and I hate to possibly derail your thread with the first reply, but could you tell us more about the heating grid you mentioned?

a balmy 25F!!! but super windy, so feels much colder.  We've been mostly in the teens and 20's for quite a while now, cold greenhouse air temps staying right around 30.  Roots are right around 37 -40ish on the heat mats, just right.  Been working on wiring while I have time.

Our weather, while much more temperate, has been below normal. Low 20's at night. Low to mid 30's during the day. Windy, light snow and sleet last week. Temps about 15 degrees below average.

However our climate is generally good except for the wicked heat and humidity in the summer.

Happy Holidays to all.

Sorry I should have given some details on the 'grid'.

I took some 3/4 inch copper tubing soldered it into a grid using 'T's' and elbows with valves at both ends. the grid is the shape of my shelf in the garage. I filled the grid with auto antifreeze, the antifreeze is a great conductor. I then purchased an electric wire/heat thing, the ones you can buy in big box stores in the plumbing department. They are used to wrap around your water pipes and keep them from freezing. They come in many lengths and come with a thermostat.
My thought was the heat wrap wire would heat the pipe, the antifreeze will transfer the heat fairly evenly and the pots...which sit directly on the grid will pick up some of the heat. It appears my plan does work. I've used this system for over 10 years.
One word of warning.... do NOT solder the pipe with the antifreese in it. And NEVER use this pipe for anything else!!!

I'm going camping as well.
Did anyone see the Geminid meteor shower last week?  It was awesome here on the central coast despite a big moon.

24 hours later and the temp is now a more normal 13.4. That is over 32 degrees warmer than yesterday.
Plan on checking in with the trees and then spending the day out.

Merry Merry to all...... I've been without internet for 3 days finally got it back late last night.
Also got a call from my sister-in-law on Cape Cod. She said her husband saw a news story that Jeffersonville Vt (my town) was the worse hit by the ice storm in the north east. Well let me tell you... we got ice. It is sad looking at the trees bent over double by all the ice. Some of our 10 to 15 feet tall White Pines along our drive have their tops snapped off. A couple have the top 5 to 8 feet snapped.

Mother nature gives us some beautiful scenery... sometimes there is a price to pay for the view....

To all
Health   Happiness and Good Cheer

Got any photos? We had just enough ice to make for some beautiful scenes, with only minimal damage to trees. This area (Rochester NY) seems to get a really damaging ice storm about every 10 years...most recent have been in 1991 and 2003 (so we're due). Each of those storms did tremendous amounts of damage but the landscape has recovered pretty well.

Otherwise, it's been cold and snowy...-2 F last night with a fresh 2 - 3 inches of fluffy snow made for a nice white Christmas.

Thought I'd update things, and check in on everyone.
Last night the temp bottomed out at negative 19.9 F.
I awoke to negative 15.5. However, we have power and heat.
All is well. We should be warming to the upper teens today and no ice in
The forecast. All bonsai are happy and no additional damage... As of now
To the outside trees in nature.

How are you doing?

Jay,
We were a balmy ~-10F this morning, a new low temp record for the date  and the coldest since February 1996. We ran heaters in the polyhouses and got low temps in the houses of about + 13 F. Everything seems nice and relatively toasty (and humid....). Looking for mid twenties this afternoon and 40's tomorrow, Ah, the joys of winter.

Good to know you folks up in the NE are doing well, and have power... It's all about having power.  Doing fine here, temps are low singles at night, and warming to 20's daytimes.  I am good with that, I hate the warmups myself.  The wind has been a problem for humans, and will only get worse (along with colder temps) for the first part of next week.  I've got the clothes, so I don't care, I love the snow time. :D

heat mats are the bomb.

Woke up to -16 F, steady 20 mph wind, with gusts to 35 mph. Frostbite time, 4 to 8 minutes unless you can stay out of the wind.

Still, we have had colder here, it just has been over 30 years since we have seen it this cold here. (Between Chicago & Milwaukee)

What kinds of plants do you have in those polyhouses? Bonsai, stock/nursery plants? I have most of my trees in a heated shelter in my barn where I can maintain temps of 27 or higher, but there was some overflow left in the barn...where it got down to 12 or 13 one night. The overflow is larger nursery stock so it should be OK...but those kinds of temps on unprotected pots make me a little nervous.

Actual outside temperature got down to -9 one night, which is about as cold as we've had in the 10 years we've lived here. May have a repeat tonight or tomorrow night.

As someone who isn't used to (and is completely disinterested in ever having again) these kinds of temperatures, what extra precautions do I need to do to ensure my trees have adequate protection.  The low here is 8°F tonight/tomorrow morning.

Right now my trees are in a small mini poly greenhouse. The temperatures tomorrow will be in the low 10s F. The greenhouse isn't heated. It just provides protection from the wind. Your recommendations for tomorrow's weather?

Ill be sure to let you know how they fair. We had 10 inches of snow on Friday and a lot of rain today. All th snow melted because of the temps and the rain. With all that moisture in the soil to freeze, I'm sure it won't be good.

I think you people who are devoted to bonsai if your young enough should all move to the west coast, find a job and live bonsai all year. How you can stand that horrid weather I will never know. I am a 62 year old ,lived on the coast all my life and have always wondered why you put up with it. Lots of opportunity out here and there is no reason not to.
Happy new year everyone

So I guess your trees have been exposed to pretty cold temps in previous winters (maybe not quite this cold). Have you ever seen any evidence of damage? It's 4 F outside right now with winds gusting to 40+ mph so it's going to be pretty cold in my garage and barn...not sure the heater in the barn shelter will be able to keep up.

Chris,
I didn't put plastic up until Thanksgiving weekend. Trees had seen several freezes and temps down to 15. The big thing I want the plastic to do is to protect the trees from the desiccating winds you can get, that kills trees faster than just about anything . In fact, when temps are going above 20 on sunny winter days, we open doors and windows. We run fans all the time, the goal is to keep trees cold as much as possible to keep them dormant and  protected until it is time to wake them up in the spring. Trees in the dark need to be cold/cool, you should be fine with adapted trees.

Gaffer , been there done that. Graduated from high school in the Willamette Valley. Got tired of 250 days of rain. Moved back to Oregon to finish Graduate School- Same thing. Lived in Seattle area while working at Sand Point NMFS facility, really hated the weather. We get 8 months of good weather, I can live with four tough ones. Plus, when I get the urge to do out of season things, I go to Hayward.

Gaffer, 'different strokes for different folks'.... the west coast has its points but don't sell the north east short.
Some of us love to complain but really love 4 true seasons ( 5 if you live in Vermont and have mud season). Also it is nice to be able to grow different species, I've yet to see a killer Larch in the South...South West or most of California.
Do our trees grow slower...Yes, but there are many of us who love it here.

As for me...I'm looking out my window at a lovely day. Presently 1 and likely to go up to 10F. I'm looking at the ski hill, just a few miles from my door. If I choose I can be skiing inside 15 minutes. Snowshoe or cross country. The seasons are our friends.

Oh... and if I'm correct, the west coast is 3 hours behind us...just saying. ;D

Bracing for the coldest yet this year here.  I only have a couple plants I'm worried about, one of them a Chinese quince, that is in the cold greenhouse. I've not seen temps here like this since I have had this tree, and some things I've read say keep from frost... I know they can take a freeze, but how far down is safe for them in a pot?  We are going to be -15 to -20 overnights, and a couple days not to get out of negative digits.  Should be fine with bottom heat right?  There is a small air heater in there, that keeps it from getting too far below freezing, but it hasn't been this cold here for some years, and I don't know how cold it will go as it can't keep up completely.
Anybody have experience with Chinese quince in the very cold?

Judy, mine have a few green leaves and have gone down to around 10F with no heat. You should be fine at 15+ F, probably even lower thanh that.

Good to know, thank you John.  Guess I'll find out how cold the BC's can get, they live outside in the winter in a mulch bench I built for them, along with the other cold hardy stuff.  They are the only thing I'm not sure of out there, I'm sure the larch  and crab will love it.
I did enclose the mulch bench with a tarp and hung a couple clip lights inside that I'll turn on at nights to create a little bit of warmth near the BC.  At least we have Plenty of snow, and I buried it all DEEP.
Hope everyone else survives the bitter cold that is coming.

My BC's in Arkansas took -10 sitting outside, but it was only cold for a week or ten days. I imagine buried they should do fine, especially if protected from the wind. They do well up into zone 5.

Its cold here.  Has been for days.  its been single digit temps during day with 20-30 mph winds and 40 gusts.  I have tridents and bald cypress sitting outside unprotected.  Of course the pots are well buried in snow so they are insulated.  Nothing to be concerned with.  Supposed to be -5 tomorrow and -15 tomorrow night.  A non-issue.

Don't get worked up.  Trees are very resilient if they are healthy.

Hello All,

We'be been in the polar vortex with temps from +3 to 20. Had a respite this weekend temps around 32. Going back on the polar vortex tonight with a low of about +4. This is very cold for central MD.

I have my trees buried in mulch with plastic which is placed over the benches in "lean to" style. Sides are open. Provides a good windbreak. Finally got some snow and shoveled some over the trees for extra insulation.

Hope to go back to our average temps sometime soon. Wanted to do a bit of wiring but everything is frozen. Looking forward to Spring.

Best to all.

Larry, one of the off-shoots of increased ocean temperatures and decreased ice and cold at the poles is greater weather variability. I know it has snowed in the Houston area of Texas before, but what I think you will find is that odd weather will just get to be more the rule than the exception. Who knows, in 20 uears you might be able to grow Larch .

The really nice part for us northerners is that we get an extended repotting season.  There have been years where repotting season came early and was short because it was instant spring.  that is not the case this year.  Hopefully, when it begins to warm, it stays warm, rather than multiple returning hard freezes.  As long as your trees are protected, this is a great repotting season.  :)

Between Chicago & Milwaukee, I still have 2 feet of snow covering my trees outside. To get to the trees I have to slog through nearly 3 ft deep drifts of old snow. Its Sunday March 9, it doesn't feel natural to have this much snow still on the ground. Good news, nothing is popping out of dormancy yet, so no rush to do anything. I can relax a little this weekend.
