Title: Purchasing tools
Post by: BonsaiEngineer1493 on June 10, 2014, 08:39 PM
Hey

I am looking to purchase more tools this summer. I will be purchasing a wire cutter and knob cutter locally at "Bonsai of Brooklyn". However, I will also be purchasing a folding saw and chisel. I know silky makes really good folding saws; however, I am having a problem finding a chisel. I read that narex makes good chisels. What do you guys recommend for a chisel? In addition what sizes should I purchase?

Nick

These are what I have, though I don't remember paying $70 for them...they are strong, hold a good edge, and you can use a mallet.  It's not labeled, but I believe this is a Masakuni chisel:

Kathy Shaner has one that's all metal, 1/4" rounded tip, 14" long, tapering up to a nail head.  She had it made for her while in Japan, and I guess the maker is no longer around.  It's the coolest tool, and I wish I could get my hands on one.

Kaneshin has some solid steel gr. chisels:  http://kaneshin.shop.multilingualcart.com/index_en_jpy_14.html (http://kaneshin.shop.multilingualcart.com/index_en_jpy_14.html)

I've bought sev. of their tools this last yr and am very impressed with the quality.

What kind of shipping service did you choose when you purchased on kaneshin's website?

I went with whatever they chose. I think the Sms.

I ended up just emailing them my order, and received the paypal link.

It is so easy, and yes, highly recommended.

Your only dissappointment will be not ordering everything you can!
Once I got mine I was thinking I should have ordered more stuff! ;D

Sorce

P.s. it was Chrisl convinced me to go for it. Thanks again Chris!

Congrats Sorce!  You won't be disappointed ;)  And, I felt the same...and did indeed order more tools.  After seeing the build quality, I figured it was time to update some of my older, and inferior tools.  Like, simple tweezers.  The Kaneshin tweezer is 3X the weight for instance than my cheap tweezers...same with the wire cutters.  I simply love the feel of them.

New tools are so fun! lol

If you haven't purchased yet you might take a look at these. I have had good luck purchasing at California Bonsai.
